Takeaways from Week Two against Florida A&M

Troy put one in the win column for the first time in 2018 with a convincing 59-7 win over Florida A&M.

It was a big win, despite the level of competition, for multiple reasons.

Troy’s offense desperately needed to find its way early on this season and they did just that on Saturday.  Last year’s group was potent from the get-go but only put up 31 points against Alabama State in game two.

This season’s young cast managed to drop a 50-piece.

In this article, we’ll look at several positives and negatives that can be taken away from the second game of the year.

+ Offensive line going deep

A week after barely going seven-deep on the offensive line, Troy used a whopping 13 players up front and all of them had at least 13 snaps played. Dylan Bradshaw got his first action of the year and graded out at 95 while Tristan Crowder improved on his 88 grade against the Broncos with a 95 of his own.

+ Finding the endzone

Troy tallied up 477 yards of offense against FAMU, a +98 difference from the previous week. Yet the Trojans scored 39 more points than the week before, causing Troy’s yards per six points to go from 113.7 to 48.5 YP6.

+ Run defense is stout as ever

The Rattlers ran the football 32 times against Troy and only amassed 68 yards. That works out to a 2.13 yards per carry average and leave’s Troy’s two game average of 2.98. The defense tied a Neal Brown era game record of 14 tackles for loss and lead the Sun Belt with 19 total.

– Giving up big plays

Troy’s secondary struggled to contain Brett Rypien and his minions and it carried over into week two, at least early on. Troy gave up another play of 50+ yards against the Rattlers and have now allowed three through the first two games. FAMU wideout Marcus Williams had over 100 receiving yards, making it twice in the past five games that Troy has allowed a 100-yard receiver in back to back games.
