Troy Fires Men’s Basketball Coach Phil Cunningham
Troy University officially announced the firing of head men’s basketball coach Phil Cunningham on Monday.
Cunningham went 80-111 in six seasons as head coach, including five losing seasons. Troy’s only winning season of the Cunningham era came in 2017 when the Trojans won the Sun Belt as a six-seed and earned their second ever NCAA tournament bid.
Athletic Director Jeremy McClain released the following statement:
“I want to thank Phil Cunningham and his staff for their dedication to Troy University. They have always represented us the right way and cared deeply for our student athletes. However, at this point I feel it is necessary for us to provide new leadership for the program moving forward. We will begin immediately in the search for our next head coach.”
The firing comes comes after Troy’s 2018-19 season ended at 12-18. The Trojans were just 5-13 in conference play and did not qualify for the Sun Belt tournament.
