Top Troy Wide Receiver Fan Poll Results

Troy’s wide receiver fan poll proved as contentious as I’d expected it to. Even the #1 spot proved to come out differently than conventional wisdom would dictate. However, much you might disagree on how the results came out, one thing that is not up for debate is the quality of wide receivers Troy has had over its long and storied history.

I attempted to reach out to our top vote getters, but did not get a response from all as of the time the article was published. I will update it if and when others respond to my interview requests.

The Best

#3 – Damion Willis – 24 votes (25.5%)

It is an inarguable fact that much of Troy’s success under Neal Brown was predicated on the passing game. Without a dynamic receiver of Willis’ caliber, his offense would not have been half as dynamic as it was.

Willis allowed himself to be a constant contributor and a team player. This is one of the reasons Willis was able to find an opportunity in the NFL and will continue to remain one of Troy’s most successful wide receivers.

#2 Jerrel Jernigan – 42 votes (44.7%)

No one has done more in the cardinal, silver, and black than Jerrel Jernigan. I covered most of Jerrel’s accomplishments in the ranking article, but he is without a doubt a Trojan legend at the wide receiver position.

His performances on the Sun Belt streak squads from 2007-2010 secured his place in Troy history.

#1 Eric Thomas – 79 votes (84%)

While Eric Thomas’ Troy teams may not have had the best records, he did all he could (along with Corey Robinson) to propel those teams forward. He was relentless on the field and continued to strive for success.

When asked about what this meant to him, Thomas said, “It’s an honor to be in the same sentence with some of the greats Troy has produced over the years.”

His catch against South Alabama still lives as one of the biggest catches of the late-Blakeney era. You can read more about that here. The fan poll definitely let Thomas know how much they appreciated his time as a Trojan.

Most importantly, Thomas hopes Trojan fans will remember that he “was always respectful and did the little things.” For him, the family he created while at Troy was one of his favorite parts of his time at Troy.

The Offensive Line rankings will be posted next Thursday with a fan poll. Be sure to check that out and vote! Follow me on Twitter at @BenOnSports for all your Trojan history needs!
