Scott Cross named Troy Head Basketball Coach

The short search for a new head basketball coach is over.

Troy Athletics Director Jeremy McClain announced the University has hired former Texas-Arlington head coach Scott Cross to take over as the program’s seventh head coach.

The Mavericks parted ways with Cross a year ago to the day. After leaving his alma mater, he spent the last year as an assistant head coach at TCU.

Cross was promoted from an assistant to UTA’s head coach in 2006. In those 12 years, he racked up 225 wins, three conference championships (one regular season) and five postseason appearances.

That’s an average of over 18 wins per year. In UTA’s five years as a Sun Belt school, he won 103 games for an average of 20 wins per year.

Cross took home the 2017 Sun Belt Coach of the Year award as well as the 2012 Southland Coach of the Year award—both years his team won the regular season conference title. He also won the NABC District Coach of the Year in each of those seasons.

The Horned Frogs are a No. 1 seed in this year’s NIT, and they play Creighton in the quarterfinals tonight.

The athletic department is holding a fan reception at 10 a.m. Thursday and an introductory press conference at 11 a.m.
