Troy Football Coaching Search 24 – The List of Candidates

So what now what? The search is on for the 24th head football coach at Troy, just in time for National Signing Day.

Here at the Wall, we’re conducting our own search, analyzing coaches from all over college football to see how they would look in Cardinal. We’ll start with a list of potential candidates, from the unlikely to the people we think will get the first call.

The last time we did this, we had ten names in mind and got you to send us more. We don’t have that many this go round, we don’t have as much time, but we do want your input.

Shoot us names of coaches you think would be a good fit on X and we’ll add them. We’ll take that list and use a scientific equation to determine who would be the best fits. Later, we’ll bring you the results of that study.

Many of these guys don’t have head coaching experience, so that’s not something we’re going to hold against them. As much as we’d prefer a defensive coach, it’s not fair to discount someone for their specialty.

The one thing we did value? Ties to Troy. Sumrall and Brown cared about the University and the community, but the guy between them didn’t seem concerned.

We want someone who loves Troy as much as they love being a coach, if not more.

You’re gonna see familiar names on here. You’re going to see strange names when we run our matrix this week. The bottom line is this: the next Troy coach will likely come from these seven men.

If not, we’ll tell you the next time you’re reading this page.

Now, here are the seven people we consider to be our personal “short list” for the Troy job, in alphabetical order.

  • Derrick Ansley
    • Defensive coordinator, Los Angeles Chargers
    • Tie to Troy: Played from 2000-2004
    • Pro: championship experience, NFL experience
    • Note: Ansley was served a show-cause this year. If hired by any college in the next two years, he would be unable to recruit on or off campus.
  • Bam Hardmon
    • Defensive Run Game Coordinator, Troy
    • Tie to Troy: Defensive coach 2015-23
    • Pro: Knows the culture, can maintain the defensive strength
  • Jordan Lesley
    • Defensive Coordinator/Outside Linebackers, West Virginia
    • Tie to Troy: Player 2000-04, GA 2006, Defensive Line Coach 2015-18
    • Pro: Knows the culture, can maintain the defensive strength
  • Matt Moore
    • Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line, West Virginia
    • Tie to Troy: Offensive Line Coach 2006, 2015-18
    • Pro: Knows the culture, Neal Brown’s right-hand man
  • Al Pogue
    • Assistant Head Coach / Cornerbacks, Mizzou
    • Tie to Troy: Cornerbacks Coach 2014-18, 2021
    • Pro: Knows the culture, can maintain the defensive strength, BCS/SEC Championship experience
  • Tommie Robinson
    • CORRECTION: Assistant Coach, Colorado
    • Tie to Troy: Player 1982-86
    • Pro: championship experience, NFL experience, would maintain rushing dominance
  • Zach Yenser
    • Offensive Line Coach, Kentucky
    • Tie to Troy: Player 2003-06, GA 2007
    • Pro: Knows the culture, John Schlarman’s successor

    Hello,

Here are my suggestions as candidates for the next head coach of Troy football.
Corey Dennis from Ohio State (has Troy roots and even named one of his sons Troy).
Bill Clark formerly of UAB (successful, older and would not likely leave after 2 or 3 years)
Matt Entz current HC of North Dakota State (is a proven winner with a overall record of 59-10 and is a man of faith)
These are my top 3 candidates. Go Trojans! Class of 86

Without a doubt the BEST candidate for the coaching position is Jordan Lesley !!!! He is dedicated to the football program, the school and the community!!!! His work ethic is beyond words!!!! And because it played and coached their he cares more !!!!!

If Robert and Alabama were run as effectively as the Troy football program was run, they would retire the national championship trophy. I have nothing but admiration for the Troy football program. And what are the accomplishes year after year after year, they are simply amazing.

Coach Tommie Robinson would define be a good candidate. He’s been around in both college and NFL coaching and he’s won National Championship and he’s the most RESPECTED man that I have ever known. .
